New formalities for travel to the UK: ETA becomes compulsory
Since the April 2, 2025, the United Kingdom has introduced a new requirement for many travellers: the’Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), or electronic travel authorization. This system aims to tighten border controls while simplifying procedures for entering the country.

Who is affected by ETA?
The ETA applies to the majority of travellers wishing to enter the UK for business purposes. short-term stays (up to 6 months), whether tourismof business travelof family visits or studies.
It is mandatory for :
- Nationals of the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland; ;
- Citizens of previously visa-exempt countries, such as the Canada, the United States, the Japan, l’Australia, etc.
On the other hand, are not concerned :
Holders of a valid visa ;
British or Irish citizens; ;
Permanent residents of the United Kingdom ;
People travelling from the common travel area (Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man).
How do I apply?
You can apply for an ETA online, via the official UK government website or the mobile app UK ETA app. You will need to supply :
- A biometric passport valid,
- A recent photo,
- Personal information,
- Answers to a few safety questions.
Validity, cost and deadlines
- Decision within 3 working days ;
- Validity: 2 years or until passport expires ;
- Can be used for multiple inputs ;
- Current cost: £10, which will increase to 16 (about €19) from April 9, 2025
Please note: no ETA, no entry
Transport companies must check your ETA status before departure. In the absence of a valid authorization, you may be denied boarding or entry into the country.
Beware of unofficial websites
Many third-party sites offer support at prices well above the official rate, with no real benefits. The British government points out that :
